Types of Benchtop Tablet Presses

There are different types of benchtop tablet presses available, such as single punch tablet presses, a multi press station and rotary presses. Let's take a closer look at these tablet presses and what makes them different from one another.

Single Punch Tablet Presses

A single punch tablet press, which also goes by the name of single station press, is the simplest machine for tablet manufacturing. This machine uses a single set of station tooling, which is a die and a pair of upper and lower punches. During use, the compaction force on the fill material is exerted by the upper punch, while the lower punch is simply static. The single punch press is referred to as the stamping process, since the action is similar to a hammering motion. Most single punch tablet presses produce about 60-85 tablets per minute.

Rotary Presses

With a rotary press, the compaction force on the fill material is exerted by both the upper and lower punches, which leaves the powder granules to be compressed in the middle. Also known as accordion compression. Rotary presses offer high productivity with a minimal amount of labor. Saving the user money in the process. Most rotary presses have an output between 9,000 and 234,000 tablets per hour. One of the nice advantages of utilizing a rotary press is that is allows for independent control of both weight and hardness, speeding up the tableting process and making it easier to customize.

Multi-Station Presses

A multi-station press is a machine that has several tooling stations that rotate to compress granules/powder mixture into tablets of uniform size, shape and weight. This type of tablet compressor was created in order to increase the output of tablets.

How Tablets are Formed

Here is a quick rundown of the sequence of events involved in the formation of tablets. The events involved in the production of tablets can be divided into three stages:

1) Filing

In position 1, the upper punch raises and the lower punch drops in order to create a cavity in the die. Then with position 2, the feed shoe moves over the die cavity and granules fall into the die cavity under the influence of gravity from the hopper.

2) Compression

During compression we get position 3, which is where the feed shoe moves out of the way and the hopper punch descends in order to compress the granules/powder mixture into tablets by progressive reduction of the porosity of the die content and forcing the particles into close contact with one another.

3) Ejection

Lastly, we get to position 4 with ejection. In this step, the upper punch retracts and the lower punch moves upwards too to eject the compressed tablet. Once finished, the events then repeat over and over again until the feed material is all used up.
