What Are Tablet Presses?

Stokes D3 Tablet Press-16 StationFirst and foremost, what are tablet presses? To start, tablet presses are also referred to as tableting machines, pharmaceutical tablet presses, tablet compressing machines, and tablet punching machines. In general, this is a machine that compresses powders into tablets of uniform size, shape, and weight. All containing the exact same quantity. It is more prominently used within the pharmaceutical industry to manufacture many different types of tablets, but it can also be used for cleaning products and cosmetics.

These machines use basic principle of compression to create the tablet. The basic unit of any tablet press is tooling that consists of two punches and a die called station. How it works is that the upper and lower punches come together in the die that contains the tablet formulation. It is crucial for each tablet to have the exact same measurements. As with any medicine, the dosing needs to be precise. So having a machine that is exacting is necessary.

Tablet Press Classification

There are many different models of presses that are manufactured by a number of different companies. These presses will range in size, speed, and capacity. However, when it comes to the classification of a tablet press, there are only two distinct classifications:

  • Single punch, single station, and eccentric presses
  • Multi-station and rotary presses

  1. When the new batch is complete, turn off the power.
  2. Use a vacuum to suck up any dust, dirt or granulation around the press.
  3. Release the pressure from the punches.
  4. Remove the feed hopper and the feed shoe.
  5. Then remove both the upper and lower punches, as well as the die.
  6. Clean all of the surfaces of the tablet machine.
  7. After the cleaning, dry the machine.
  8. Use a thin coating of grease or oil to cover the surfaces before you store it.
